Hu Shuli, the esteemed Chinese journalist and editor, was born on November 29, 1953, in Jinan, Shandong Province, China. Her father, Cao Qifeng, a senior Chinese Communist Party official, and her mother, Hu Lingsheng, cultivated a politically connected upbringing that would significantly influence her future. Her older brother Hu Yuzhi died in January 1986 due to illness.

During the tumultuous Cultural Revolution, Hu Shuli and other urban youth underwent “re-education” in a rural village in Jiangxi Province.
