These forces were led by Ferdinand Magellan, who was a Portuguese explorer. Magellan had help from local leaders, Rajah Humabon and Datu Zula. Lapulapu‘s victory is an important part of Philippine history.

Early Life And Education
Lapu Lapu was born in 1491 in Mactan, Philippines. His parents were Inday Puti and Kusgano. We don’t know if he had any siblings or where he went to school. He was Filipino, but we don’t have information about his religion.
Career
Lapulapu was one of the two leaders, or datus, of Mactan before the Spanish came to the Philippines. The other leader was Zula. Both of them were part of the Maginoo class, a noble class in their society. When the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived in the Philippines for Spain, Zula paid tribute to the Spanish king. However, Lapulapu refused to do so.
On April 27, 1521, at midnight, Magellan gathered a group of about 60 Spaniards. He also brought around 20 to 30 war boats, called karakoa, filled with warriors from Humabon in Cebu. They reached Mactan three hours before dawn.
After the Battle of Mactan, Lapulapu and Humabon became friends again. Later, Lapulapu chose to go back to Borneo with his family and 17 of his men. After that, we don’t know what happened to him. After Magellan‘s journey, more expeditions were sent to the islands. Five expeditions took place: Loaisa in 1525, Cabot in 1526, Saavedra in 1527, Villalobos in 1542, and Legazpi in 1564. The Legazpi expedition was the most successful, and it led to the colonization of the islands.
