Afzal Khan was born on 5 April 1958 in Jhelum, Punjab, Pakistan, and is currently 68 years old. He moved to the United Kingdom as a child and initially left school without formal qualifications.
Early in his career, he worked as a cotton mill laborer, bus driver, and police constable with Greater Manchester Police.
He later returned to education at Abraham Moss College before studying law at Manchester Polytechnic, now known as Manchester Metropolitan University.

Afzal Khan began his professional life in several different occupations before qualifying as a solicitor in 1996.
He later became a partner in a law firm and also became involved in community relations and interfaith work. He entered elected politics in 2000, when he was elected to Manchester City Council for Cheetham.
In 2005, he became Lord Mayor of Manchester, serving until 2006 and becoming the first Muslim to hold the position. He later entered European politics and was elected Member of the European Parliament for North West England in 2014, serving until 2017.
Khan entered the UK Parliament in 2017 as the Member of Parliament for Manchester Gorton. In opposition, he held several shadow roles covering immigration, South Asia, Africa and the Commonwealth, deputy leadership of the House of Commons, legal aid, and exports.
Following the 2023 constituency boundary changes, Manchester Gorton was replaced by Manchester Rusholme. Khan was elected to represent Manchester Rusholme at the 2024 general election and continues to serve as its MP. He also serves on the Joint Committee on Human Rights.
