Austin Scott was born on 10 December 1969 in Augusta, Georgia, to parents Jim Scott, an orthopedic surgeon, and Becky Scott, a public school teacher. He has one sister who works as a teacher.
Scott grew up in Georgia and attended Tiftarea Academy, graduating in 1987. He went on to the University of Georgia, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Risk Management and Insurance in 1993. He is of American origin, and his religion is Southern Baptist.

Austin Scott began his professional career after graduating from the University of Georgia by working in the insurance industry. He served as a senior agent with the Principal Financial Group and later founded and operated his own insurance brokerage firm, the Southern Group, LLC, for nearly twenty years. At the age of 26 he entered politics, winning election to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1996, where he served until 2010 across several districts. During his state legislative tenure he chaired the Governmental Affairs Committee and served on Appropriations, Rules, and Ways and Means committees.
Scott‘s career advanced when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2010, taking office in January 2011 as the representative for Georgia’s 8th District. He has been reelected multiple times and is currently serving his eighth term.
In Congress he has held assignments on the House Armed Services Committee, the House Agriculture Committee (where he serves as Vice Chairman and chairs the Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities, Risk Management, and Credit), the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and the House Rules Committee.
