Nigerian politician Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, born on October 5, 1958, has been the governor of Bauchi State since 2019.

He served as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory from 2010 to 2015 and as Senator for Bauchi South from 2007 to 2010. He is a senior member of the Peoples Democratic Party, the main opposition party.

He began his public service career as an administrative officer in the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs, where he remained until 1994, when he was appointed Principal Administration Officer to the Presidency. Bala Mohammed rose quickly through the civil service ranks.

Early Life

He was born to Fulani parents on October 5, 1958, in Duguri town, Alkaleri local government area, Bauchi State.

He started schooling in 1965 at Duguri Primary School in Bauchi, finishing in 1971 with a first leaving certificate. From 1972 to 1976, he attended Government School Bauchi, where he received his WAEC.

In 1979, he received his advanced-level commendation from North East College of Art and Science. He graduated from the University of Maiduguri with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

His political godfather, Governor Isa Yuguda, reportedly lost out with him after Yuguda married President Umaru Yar’Adua‘s daughter and defected to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Following Umaru Yar’Adua’s death, Mohammed joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and grew close to President Goodluck Jonathan.

Bala Mohammed ran for and won the election to serve the people of Bauchi State’s South Senatorial Zone as a senator in 2007 on the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party [ANPP]. From 2007 until 2010, he served as a senator.

While serving in the Senate, he became one of Nigeria’s most outspoken lawmakers. Bala Mohammed served on eight committees, notably as secretary of the Northern Senator’s Forum and vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation. The committees included communication, finance, public accounting, business rules, environment, labour, and productivity.

Senator Bala Mohammed was sworn in as the Governor of Bauchi State on May 29, 2019, under the Peoples Democratic Party banner, after defeating the incumbent Governor, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar, by 515,313 to 500,625 votes.

On January 20, 2020, the Supreme Court upheld the victory.
