Hannah Yeoh is a Malaysian politician and lawyer currently the Minister of Youth and Sports in the Unity Government administration.

She is also the Member of Parliament for Segambut, a parliamentary constituency in Kuala Lumpur. She is a member of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), a Pakatan Harapan coalition component party.

Clocking 44 years old in 2023, Hannah Yeoh was born on January 9, 1979, in Subang Jaya, Malaysia. She is the eldest of three children of Yeoh Kian Teik, a businessman, and Tan Siew Hoon, a homemaker.

She has a younger brother and a younger sister. She is of Chinese descent and identifies as a Christian.

Hannah Yeoh attended SK Sri Subang Jaya, SRK SS19, and SMK Subang Utama for primary and secondary education.

She participated in various co-curricular activities, such as debating, public speaking, and drama. She was also a prefect and a head girl in her school.

Hannah Yeoh continued her studies at the University of Tasmania in Australia and obtained her law degree in 2001.

Career

Hannah Yeoh started her political career in 2008 when she won the Subang Jaya state seat in the Selangor State Legislative Assembly.

She was the youngest and the first female candidate to contest for the seat. She defeated Lee Hwa Beng, the incumbent from the Barisan Nasional coalition, with a majority of 13,851 votes.

Hannah Yeoh made history by becoming the first woman and the youngest Speaker of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly in 2013. She was elected unanimously by all the assembly members.

She served as the Speaker until 2018 when she contested and won the Segambut parliamentary seat in the 14th general election.



She defeated Loga Bala Mohan, the incumbent from the Barisan Nasional coalition, with a majority of 45,702 votes.

Hannah Yeoh was appointed Deputy Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development in the Pakatan Harapan administration led by Mahathir Mohamad in 2018.

She worked under the Minister, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, also the Deputy Prime Minister. She held this position until the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government in February 2020.

In December 2022, Hannah Yeoh was appointed Minister of Youth and Sports in the Unity Government administration led by Anwar Ibrahim.

She is the first woman to hold this portfolio. She is also the Assistant National Publicity Secretary of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) since March 2022.

As a politician, Hannah Yeoh has championed various causes, such as women’s empowerment, child welfare, religious harmony, and environmental protection.

Controversy

Hannah Yeoh has been involved in some controversies throughout her political career.

In 2014, she was sued by a Muslim activist, Mohd Ridhuan Tee Abdullah, for allegedly insulting Islam and Malay rights in her book Becoming Hannah.

She denied the allegations and said her book was about her journey and faith. The case was dismissed by the High Court in 2016.

In 2017, she was investigated by the police for sedition after she posted a tweet criticizing the government’s decision to implement the khat (Jawi calligraphy) syllabus in vernacular schools.

She claimed that she was merely expressing her opinion and defending the rights of the parents and students. The Attorney General’s Chambers later dropped the investigation.

In 2019, she was called out by the mother of a murdered 15-year-old girl, Ng Yuk Tim, for her statement on abolishing the death penalty.

The mother accused her of being insensitive and unhelpful when she was looking for her missing daughter in 2013.

Hannah Yeoh responded by apologizing and explaining her stance on the issue. She also said that she had tried to assist the mother at the time but could not reach her.

In 2020, she was questioned by the police for allegedly making seditious remarks about the appointment of the new Chief Minister of Sabah, Hajiji Noor.

She had posted a Facebook message congratulating the former Chief Minister, Shafie Apdal, and expressing her hope for a better Malaysia. She denied any wrongdoing and said she was exercising her freedom of speech.
