Jeff Radebe is a notable South African political figure, born on February 18, 1953, in Durban, Natal (now KwaZulu-Natal). While details about his family, including his parents and siblings, remain undisclosed, Radebe has chosen to keep his early life private. 

Jeff Radebe earned a B. Juris degree from the esteemed University of Zululand in 1976. Furthering his academic pursuits, he obtained an LLM in International Law from Leipzig University, another prestigious institution. He completed his studies at Leipzig University, receiving his LLM in 1981.


While still a student, Jeff Radebe joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1976. The ANC then sent him to Tanzania in 1977, where he worked as a journalist for a radio station in Dar es Salaam. However, after the ANC’s covert mission faced setbacks in 1986, Radebe was detained, and the Apartheid government utilized the Terrorism Act to convict him. Following his conviction, he spent ten years incarcerated on Robben Island but was fortunately released in 1990 after a 12-day hunger strike.

In 2009, Jeff Radebe assumed the role of South Africa’s Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development. During his tenure, he successfully implemented the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and played a vital role in shaping the country’s new constitution. Additionally, Radebe played a significant part in prosecuting Jacob Zuma, the former South African president facing corruption charges.

In 2014, Jeff Radebe stepped down from his position as Minister of Justice and transitioned to Minister in the Presidency, serving until 2018. Subsequently, he took on the role of Minister of Energy in 2018 but ultimately resigned from this position in 2019.
