Marc Garneau is a Canadian politician and astronaut who was born on 23 February 1949 in Québec City, Canada. He was raised by his parents, Jean and Andre Garneau, and his younger brother, Philippe. 

Garneau has a strong academic background, having received a B.S. in engineering physics from the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, in 1970 and a doctorate in electrical engineering from the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London, England, in 1973.

Career

Marc Garneau is a Canadian astronaut who has significantly contributed to space exploration. He was chosen as one of the first six Canadian astronauts in 1983 and became the first Canadian to travel to space in 1984 on the Space Shuttle Challenger. 

Since then, he has flown on multiple missions, including STS-41G, STS-77, and STS-97, and has held leadership positions within the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), including President from 2001 to 2005. Garneau’s achievements have inspired many and helped advance the space exploration field.

Marc Garneau had a long and successful career in Canadian politics. He was first elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Liberal Party in 2008 and served in various governmental positions.

 From 2015 to 2021, he served as the Minister of Transport under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, where he played a key role in shaping Canadian transportation policy. In 2021, he became the Minister of Foreign Affairs before retiring from politics in 2023.
