Career

Nurul Izzah Anwar’s political career began with the creation of the People’s Justice Party (PKR) in 1999, where she played a vital role in its establishment and development.

She was elected as the party’s vice president in 2010 and served until 2018 when she resigned in protest of the PH coalition’s decision to nominate her father as the prime ministerial candidate. She rejoined the party as the vice president in 2022.

She debuted in electoral politics in 2008 when she contested and won the parliamentary seat of Lembah Pantai, defeating the incumbent Shahrizat Abdul Jalil of the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition.

She retained the seat in 2013 before moving to Permatang Pauh in 2018, the constituency that her father and mother previously held.

She won the seat with a large majority but lost it in 2022 to Muhammad Fawwaz Mohamad Jan of the opposition Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition. She has also held various positions and roles in the parliament and the government.

She was the chairperson of the Consideration of Bills Select Committee from 2018 to 2019, overseeing the scrutiny and deliberation of proposed legislation.

  • In 2016, she sparked a public outcry when she met and took a photo with Jacel Kiram, the daughter of the self-proclaimed Sultan of Sulu who led an armed intrusion into Sabah in 2013. She apologized and explained that she knew Kiram’s identity and background.
