She is the daughter of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and former Deputy Prime Minister Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

She is the eldest child of Anwar Ibrahim and Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, both prominent politicians and activists. She has five sisters and one brother.

She grew up in a politically active family and witnessed her father’s rise and fall as a deputy prime minister and opposition leader.

She also experienced his imprisonment and persecution on charges of corruption and sodomy.

Nurul Izzah Anwar’s political career began with the creation of the People’s Justice Party (PKR) in 1999, where she played a vital role in its establishment and development.

She was elected as the party’s vice president in 2010 and served until 2018 when she resigned in protest of the PH coalition’s decision to nominate her father as the prime ministerial candidate. She rejoined the party as the vice president in 2022.

She retained the seat in 2013 before moving to Permatang Pauh in 2018, the constituency that her father and mother previously held.

  • In 2016, she sparked a public outcry when she met and took a photo with Jacel Kiram, the daughter of the self-proclaimed Sultan of Sulu who led an armed intrusion into Sabah in 2013. She apologized and explained that she knew Kiram’s identity and background.
