The eastern geopolitical region of Nigeria, in Aguleri, Anambra State, is where Willie Obiano was born on August 8, 1955.

He started and finished basic and secondary school in Anambra State, earning his O’Level and First School Leaving certificates.

In 1979, he was accepted into the University of Lagos, where he earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in business administration.

Career

Willie Obiano, a career governor, began his banking career in 1981 with the First Bank of Nigeria.

The former Anambra State governor left First Bank of Nigeria to work as an accountant with Chevron Oil Nigeria Plc, eventually rising to Chief Internal Auditor.

On November 30, 2021, the Peoples Gazette published an exclusive on bank documents that proved Willie Obiano had stolen over $4 billion from numerous Anambra security vote allocation accounts on March 29, 2017, without explaining.

The EFCC apprehended him at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport just hours after he resigned on March 17, 2022.

The reason for the arrest has not yet been divulged. Still, it relates to the watchlist designation and Obiano’s attempted flight from the country, according to EFCC spokesperson Wilson Uwajaren.
