Charles Soludo was Anambra State’s fourth democratically elected governor before his appointment. Governor Obiano was born in Aguleri in Anambra State, in the eastern region of Nigeria.

Early Life

The eastern geopolitical region of Nigeria, in Aguleri, Anambra State, is where Willie Obiano was born on August 8, 1955.

He started and finished basic and secondary school in Anambra State, earning his O’Level and First School Leaving certificates.

In 1979, he was accepted into the University of Lagos, where he earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in business administration.


Willie Obiano, a career governor, began his banking career in 1981 with the First Bank of Nigeria.

The former Anambra State governor left First Bank of Nigeria to work as an accountant with Chevron Oil Nigeria Plc, eventually rising to Chief Internal Auditor.

He took part in an examination of the Texaco Refinery in Rotterdam, Netherlands 1989.

The recently resigned governor of Anambra State, one of Nigeria’s top leaders, is well-known for his efforts in the state while in office.

Willie Obiano joined Fidelity Bank as Deputy Manager and head of the Audit division in 1991. He was appointed to Executive Director in October 2003.

After leaving the banking industry, Willie Obiano entered Nigerian politics and ran for governor on the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) platform on November 16, November 17, and November 30, 2013.

He was elected following a contentious election and was sworn in on March 17, 2014, to take Peter Obi’s seat.

n November 18, 2017, Governor Obiano was re-elected. On March 16, 2022, he handed the keys to Charles Soludo, effectively ending his tenure.


Following the election of Charles Chukwuma Soludo as Obiano’s successor in November 2021, speculations circulated that Obiano had been placed on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) radar.

Journalists investigated the Obiano administration’s finances in response to concerns that possible investigations into alleged corruption may be begun, even though the EFCC did not cite a basis for placing Obiano on their blacklist.

On November 30, 2021, the Peoples Gazette published an exclusive on bank documents that proved Willie Obiano had stolen over $4 billion from numerous Anambra security vote allocation accounts on March 29, 2017, without explaining.

The EFCC apprehended him at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport just hours after he resigned on March 17, 2022.

The reason for the arrest has not yet been divulged. Still, it relates to the watchlist designation and Obiano’s attempted flight from the country, according to EFCC spokesperson Wilson Uwajaren.
