Early Life and Education

Samuel Anthony Alito Jr. was born on 1 April 1950 in Trenton, New Jersey, and raised in nearby Hamilton Township.

His father, Samuel A. Alito Sr., was an Italian immigrant from Calabria who became a high school teacher and later served as director of the New Jersey Office of Legislative Services; his mother, Rose Fradusco Alito, was a schoolteacher and principal. He has one sister, Rosemary Alito, a lawyer.

He graduated as valedictorian from Steinert High School and attended Princeton University, where he earned an A.B. in history and political science in 1972, participated in ROTC, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve.

He then served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the District of New Jersey from 1977 to 1981, arguing cases before the Third Circuit, followed by roles in the Reagan administration as Assistant to the Solicitor General and Deputy Assistant Attorney General.

In 1987, he returned to New Jersey as U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, where he focused on prosecuting organized crime and other federal cases.

President George H.W. Bush nominated him to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in 1990, and he was unanimously confirmed by the Senate, serving there for 15 years and developing a reputation for careful, conservative jurisprudence. On 31 October 2005, President George W. Bush nominated him to succeed Justice Sandra Day O’Connor on the Supreme Court; after Senate confirmation, he took his seat on 31 January 2006.
