Theodore Joseph Forstmann was born on February 13, 1940, in Greenwich, Connecticut, United States. Brought up by his parents Mr. Julius Forstmann, who inherited and ran the Forstmann Woolen Company (a major textile business that later went bankrupt in 1958), and Mrs. Dorothy (née Mercadante) Forstmann in an affluent yet turbulent household in Greenwich.
He grew up as one of six children. He attended Greenwich Country Day School and Phillips Academy before earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Yale University in 1962, where he played goalie for the ice hockey team.
He later earned a Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School, paying his way through by gambling successfully at bridge.
