Early Life and Education

Alex Antetokounmpo was born on August 27, 2001, in Sepolia, Athens, Greece, to Nigerian immigrant parents, Charles and Veronica Antetokounmpo. His father, a former soccer player, passed away in 2017, and his mother, a retired high jumper, gave each of her sons both Greek and Nigerian names.

Alex, the youngest of five brothers, Francis, Thanasis, Giannis, and Kostas, grew up in a primarily Nigerian household, facing challenges as a stateless individual until receiving a Nigerian passport in 2013 and Greek citizenship in 2021, alongside his mother, granted by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.  

In 2013, Alex moved with his family to Cudahy, Wisconsin, near where his brother Giannis was beginning his NBA career with the Milwaukee Bucks. He attended Dominican High School in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, where he excelled in basketball, earning all-state honors twice. He is of Nigerian ethnicity and practices Christianity.  

Career

Alex Antetokounmpo started playing basketball at age nine with the Filathlitikos youth teams in Athens, following in his brothers’ footsteps. Opting to forgo college basketball, he announced in May 2020 that he would play professionally in Europe.

He signed a three-year contract with UCAM Murcia in Spain’s Liga ACB on June 22, 2020, debuting with their reserve team in the Liga EBA, where he recorded 28 points and six rebounds in his first game. After going undrafted in the 2021 NBA Draft, he joined the Sacramento Kings for the 2021 NBA Summer League, showcasing his potential.  

His professional journey continued with the Raptors 905 in the NBA G League (2021-2022), followed by two seasons with the Wisconsin Herd, the Milwaukee Bucks’ G League affiliate (2022-2024). In 2024, he had brief stints with M Basket Mazeikiai in Lithuania and Podgorica in Montenegro, playing five games for the latter.

On October 22, 2024, he signed with PAOK Thessaloniki in the Greek Basketball League, renewing his contract in July 2025, but requested a release on August 13, 2025, before signing a two-year deal with Aris on August 15, 2025.  

Alex has also ventured into sports ownership, joining his brothers Giannis, Thanasis, and Kostas, along with hockey player Filip Forsberg, in the ownership group of Nashville SC in Major League Soccer in 2023.
