Early Life and Education
Alexander Volkanovski was born on September 29, 1988, in Windang, New South Wales, Australia, and at 37 years old, he remains one of the country’s most accomplished combat athletes.
He was raised in the nearby Shellharbour area by his parents, Tony Volkanovski and Mary Volkanovski, alongside his older brother.
His family background combines Macedonian and Greek heritage, with his father’s roots tracing to North Macedonia and his mother having Greek ancestry. His Orthodox Christian upbringing also remained an important part of his family background.
Volkanovski developed an interest in combat sports while he was still a child. Before becoming known for mixed martial arts, he trained seriously in Greco-Roman wrestling and won two Australian national titles by the time he was 12.
At 14, however, he changed direction and entered rugby league, eventually becoming a front-rower despite being considerably shorter than many players in the position.
His rugby league career required him to build considerable strength and size, with his weight eventually rising above 90 kilograms. He played competitively before later turning his attention toward mixed martial arts.
After completing his education at Lake Illawarra High School, Volkanovski did not follow a traditional university path. Instead, he entered the workforce as a concrete finisher, working for his father’s concreting business while continuing to train and compete.
Personal Life
Alexander Volkanovski has been married to Emma Volkanovski since October 12, 2012. The couple have been together for many years and have built their family while Volkanovski developed his career from a regional fighter into one of the biggest names in the UFC.
Volkanovski and Emma are parents to four daughters, Ariana, Airlie, Reign, and Riah. His wife and children have remained an important part of his life, and he has frequently spoken about the role his family plays in motivating him through the physical and mental demands of professional fighting.

Career
Alexander Volkanovski entered professional mixed martial arts after walking away from rugby league and began competing in the Australian regional scene. He initially fought at heavier weight classes before gradually moving down until featherweight became his most successful division.
His performances in regional promotions eventually earned him a contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 2016.
Volkanovski quickly established himself as a serious contender in the UFC featherweight division. His breakthrough championship moment came in December 2019 when he defeated Max Holloway by unanimous decision to become the UFC featherweight champion.
He subsequently defended the title against Holloway in their rematch before producing further successful defenses against elite contenders.
His championship run eventually led to major super-fights outside the featherweight division. He challenged Islam Makhachev for the UFC lightweight championship twice, demonstrating his ability to compete against much larger opponents while remaining one of the sport’s leading pound-for-pound fighters.
Volkanovski briefly lost his featherweight championship in 2024, but returned to the top of the division in 2025 by defeating Diego Lopes at UFC 314.
He then faced Lopes again at UFC 325 in Sydney on January 31, 2026, successfully defending his title by unanimous decision. The judges scored the five-round contest 49-46, 49-46 and 50-45 in his favor.
The victory gave Volkanovski his eighth UFC featherweight title-fight win, tying José Aldo‘s record for championship-fight victories in the division.
The UFC also noted that the win moved him to 15-1 in UFC featherweight competition, further strengthening his case as one of the greatest featherweights in MMA history.
