Career
Amir Khan won gold at the 2003 AAU Junior Olympic Games, then took gold at the 2004 European Student Championships and the World Junior Championships in Jeju.
At the 2004 Athens Olympics, aged 17, he beat Marios Kaperonis, Dimitar Shtilianov, Jong Sub Baik and Serik Yeleuov to reach the lightweight final, where he lost to Mario Kindelan and took silver. Khan avenged both of his defeats to Kindelan in 2005, winning 19-13 in his last amateur fight.
He made his professional debut against David Bailey in July 2005 and won the Commonwealth lightweight title on July 14, 2007, when Willie Limond was retired by his corner after eight rounds.
Defences followed against Gairy St. Clair, Martin Kristjansen and Michael Gomez, the last of whom knocked him down in the second round before Khan stopped him. His first professional loss came on September 6, 2008, when Breidis Prescott stopped him in 55 seconds of the first round and took his WBO Inter-Continental lightweight title.
Khan then joined trainer Freddie Roach, who had replaced Oliver Harrison after Khan‘s first 17 professional fights, and rebuilt with a second-round stoppage of Oisin Fagan and a technical decision win over Marco Antonio Barrera in March 2009.
On July 18, 2009, Khan outpointed Andreas Kotelnik by unanimous decision to win the WBA light welterweight title.
He defended it with a first-round knockout of Dmitry Salita, an eleventh-round stoppage of Paulie Malignaggi in his first US bout at Madison Square Garden, a unanimous decision over Marcos Maidana in Las Vegas, and a sixth-round technical decision against Paul McCloskey. On July 23, 2011, he added the IBF title with a fifth-round body-shot knockout of Zab Judah.
Khan‘s reign ended on December 10, 2011, when he lost a contested split decision to Lamont Peterson in Washington, D.C. A rematch was cancelled after Peterson tested positive for synthetic testosterone, and the WBA reinstated Khan as its champion.
On July 14, 2012, Danny Garcia stopped him in the fourth round in Las Vegas, costing him the WBA Super title. He rebuilt with a tenth-round stoppage of Carlos Molina and a unanimous decision over Julio Diaz, then moved up to welterweight under trainer Virgil Hunter, beating Luis Collazo, Devon Alexander and Chris Algieri between May 2014 and May 2015.
In May 2016, Khan jumped to middleweight to challenge Canelo Alvarez and was knocked out in the sixth round. After two years away, he returned in 2018 with a first-round knockout of Phil Lo Greco and a unanimous decision over Samuel Vargas.
Terence Crawford stopped him in the sixth round at Madison Square Garden on April 20, 2019, and Khan then won the vacant WBC International welterweight title with a fourth-round stoppage of Billy Dib in Jeddah.
