Early Life and Education
Andreas Mikkelsen entered the world on 22 June 1989 in Oslo, Norway, and grew up in the Norwegian capital.
Of Norwegian origin and raised in a Christian household, he is the son of Steinar and Petra Mikkelsen. Information about siblings is not publicly available.
A gifted skier from an early age, Mikkelsen was equipped with six pairs of skis at the age of eleven and soon became a junior member of the Norwegian national ski team.
His sister also skied competitively, and he was raised in the mountains where skiing was his primary ambition as a child.
He attended Norges Toppidrettsgymnas in Bærum and Geilo, elite schools for young athletes, and was on track for a ski scholarship until knee pain at fifteen ended his skiing career.
It was on the frozen lakes near his mountain school that he first tried driving a rally car, and he fell in love with the sport immediately.
Career
Andreas Mikkelsen began his rally career at seventeen, when he moved to the United Kingdom to obtain a driving licence and entered his first rally, the Quinton Stages, in July 2006, winning it outright in a Ford Focus RS WRC.
During his debut season he competed in ten events in the UK, winning five times, and also claimed victory at the Saaremaa Rally in Estonia.
He made his World Rally Championship debut at the 2006 Wales Rally GB, retiring after going off the road, and expanded to eight WRC events in 2007.
His breakthrough came in 2008 when he finished fifth at Rally Sweden, becoming the youngest driver ever to score points in a WRC event at eighteen years and seven months old, breaking Matthew Wilson’s record.
Following the global financial crisis in 2008, his father could no longer fund his career, and Mikkelsen found himself driving a national-specification Group N Subaru, forced to rebuild his career from the ground up.
Mikkelsen’s resurgence began with the support of manager Erik Weiby, who helped him attract Norwegian sponsors and return to competitive machinery.
He won the Intercontinental Rally Challenge in 2011 and 2012, becoming the only driver to claim back-to-back IRC titles, and his performances earned him a factory seat with Volkswagen Motorsport for 2013.
Driving the Polo R WRC, he scored his first WRC victory at the 2015 Rally Catalunya, followed by wins at the 2015 Rally Australia and the 2016 Rally Australia, and finished third in the drivers’ championship for three straight seasons.
When Volkswagen withdrew from the WRC at the end of 2016, Mikkelsen was left without a drive.
He joined Hyundai in 2017 and later Citroën, but after losing his Hyundai seat at the end of 2019, he reinvented himself in WRC2, winning the championship in 2021 and again in 2023 with Škoda and Toksport WRT.
Mikkelsen’s persistence through adversity has defined the latter stages of his career.
His double WRC2 success earned him a return to the top category with Hyundai for a partial 2024 Rally1 programme on asphalt, though the team elected not to retain him for 2025.
Undeterred, he has continued to work on a Rally2 programme while keeping his sights set on the 2027 technical regulations, which he hopes will bring new manufacturers and more opportunities into the championship.
His career has been marked by an ability to extract competitive performances from whatever machinery he is given, and his willingness to rebuild from setbacks has made him one of the most admired figures in the service park.
He remains active in WRC2 competition and continues to represent Norway at the highest level of rallying.
