Early Life and Education
Brandon Woodruff was born on February 10, 1993, in Tupelo, Mississippi. He was raised by his parents, Richard and Belinda Woodruff, in the small community of Wheeler, Mississippi, where he grew up alongside his older brother, Blake.
From an early age, Woodruff displayed an uncommon aptitude for baseball; he could pitch 60 mph by age nine and was clocked at 94 mph by fourteen, already competing in high school games as a seventh-grader.
He attended Wheeler High School, where his No. 25 jersey was later retired by the baseball program. After graduating, he attended Mississippi State University, where he played college baseball for the Bulldogs and majored in kinesiology.
He is of white, American descent and identifies as Christian.
Career
Brandon Woodruff’s path to professional baseball began when the Texas Rangers selected him in the fifth round of the 2011 MLB draft out of high school, but he chose not to sign and instead honored his commitment to Mississippi State University.
After three seasons with the Bulldogs, the Milwaukee Brewers drafted him in the eleventh round of the 2014 MLB draft. He worked his way through the minor leagues, earning Brewers Minor League Pitcher of the Year honors in 2016, and made his Major League debut on August 4, 2017.
His first full breakout came in 2019, when he posted an 11–3 record and earned his first All-Star selection.
Woodruff solidified his standing as a front-line starter with a stellar 2021 campaign, finishing fifth in National League Cy Young voting after recording a 2.56 ERA and 211 strikeouts over 179.1 innings, while earning his second All-Star nod. He was named the Brewers’ Opening Day starter in both 2020 and 2021.
His career was interrupted by a major shoulder injury sustained on the eve of the 2023 postseason, which required surgery and forced him to miss the entire 2024 season.
He returned to the mound in 2025 and, after accepting a qualifying offer, became the highest-paid pitcher in Brewers franchise history for a single season in 2026.
His influence extends beyond his statistics; his perseverance through injury and personal loss—including the 2016 death of his brother Blake—has made him a respected figure in the clubhouse and a model of quiet leadership.
