Hansen began swimming at age four after his parents enrolled him in lessons. What started as an early childhood activity quickly became a serious athletic pursuit.
He trained with local swimming organisations, including the Karakung Swim Club and Suburban Seahawks Club, where he developed the breaststroke technique that eventually became his speciality.
He attended Haverford Senior High School before moving to Texas to continue both his education and swimming career.
Hansen enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin and became a leading swimmer on the Texas Longhorns team under legendary coach Eddie Reese.

Their first daughter, Charlotte Kay Hansen, was born in December 2012, around the time Hansen was completing his final Olympic campaign.
His family has remained an important part of his life after retirement, with Hansen balancing fatherhood alongside his work in swimming administration and sports development.
Hansen and Martha have maintained their family life in the Austin, Texas area, where Hansen has stayed connected to the swimming community. Away from competition, he has also enjoyed outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, and photography.
Career
Brendan Hansen established himself as an elite international swimmer at the 2001 World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, where he won the gold medal in the 200-meter breaststroke.
His collegiate career at Texas was even more dominant. From 2001 to 2005, he remained undefeated in individual breaststroke events at the NCAA Championships and collected 14 NCAA titles.
Hansen made his Olympic debut at the 2004 Athens Games, where he won a silver medal in the 100-meter breaststroke and a bronze medal in the 200-meter breaststroke.
He also helped the United States win gold in the 4×100-meter medley relay. The relay victory placed him alongside several major American swimming stars and marked the beginning of his three-Olympics run of relay gold medals.
At the 2005 World Championships in Montreal, Hansen delivered one of his strongest performances. He won gold in both the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke and added another gold medal as part of the American 4×100-meter medley relay team.
He continued competing at the highest level and later won gold in the 100-meter breaststroke at the 2007 World Championships in Melbourne.
At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Hansen again helped the United States win gold in the 4×100-meter medley relay. After taking time away from competition following the Beijing Games, he returned to training and successfully qualified for the 2012 London Olympics.
At those Games, he won his third Olympic relay gold medal in the 4×100-meter medley and added a bronze medal in the 100-meter breaststroke.
Hansen retired from competitive swimming after the 2012 Olympics and subsequently moved into sports administration. He joined the Austin Aquatics and Sports Academy and later served as USA Swimming’s National Junior Team Director.

Controversy
Brendan Hansen’s career has not been defined by major personal scandals or serious disciplinary controversies.
One of the most discussed incidents involving him occurred during the 2004 Athens Olympics in the 100-meter breaststroke final.
Hansen’s Japanese rival, Kosuke Kitajima, was accused of using an underwater dolphin kick during the race, a technique that was prohibited under the rules at the time. The incident sparked considerable discussion because Hansen finished second while Kitajima won gold.
Officials did not disqualify Kitajima because the available judging procedures did not provide sufficient grounds to overturn the result after the race.
The controversy became a memorable talking point of Hansen’s first Olympic campaign, although he continued competing at the highest level and later won multiple Olympic and world championship gold medals.
