He later transferred to the University of Iowa, where he walked on and developed into a first-team All-Big Ten return specialist, before finishing his collegiate career at Purdue University, where he earned a degree in business administration while producing one of the finest receiving seasons in school history.
He is of White ethnicity, and his religion is Christianity.
Career
Charlie Jones began his collegiate football journey at the University at Buffalo, where he redshirted in 2017 before breaking through as a redshirt freshman in 2018 with 18 receptions for 395 yards and three touchdowns.
After star players departed and he sought a bigger stage, he transferred to the University of Iowa as a walk-on, sitting out the 2019 season due to NCAA transfer rules.
His patience and work ethic paid off in 2020 when he became the Hawkeyes’ primary punt returner, earning second-team All-Big Ten honors after returning 21 punts for 221 yards and a touchdown.
The following season, he was named the Rodgers-Dwight Big Ten Return Specialist of the Year and earned first-team All-Big Ten recognition, establishing himself as one of the conference’s most electric special teams players while also contributing as a starter at receiver.
Jones’ career reached a new level after transferring to Purdue University for his final season of eligibility in 2022, where he reunited with childhood friend and starting quarterback Aidan O’Connell.
In his lone season as a Boilermaker, he produced a historic campaign: 110 receptions for 1,361 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, setting school single-season records for receiving yards and 100-yard receiving games.
He was named a consensus Second Team All-American, a First Team All-Big Ten selection, and a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award, leading the nation in receptions and finishing among the top five in receiving yards and touchdowns.
His performance at the 2023 NFL Combine, where he ran a 4.43-second 40-yard dash, solidified his draft stock, and the Cincinnati Bengals selected him in the fourth round with the 131st overall pick.
Since entering the NFL, Jones has carved out a niche as a premier return specialist for Cincinnati, becoming one of only two Bengals in franchise history to return both a kickoff and a punt for a touchdown.
In his rookie season, he scored on an 81-yard punt return against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 2, the Bengals’ first touchdown of the 2023 season, before a thumb injury limited him to 11 games.
In 2024, he returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown against the Cleveland Browns and was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance.
Despite battling injuries, including two offseason surgeries in 2025, he has continued to demonstrate elite speed and playmaking ability, with a 98-yard kickoff return touchdown against the Chicago Bears in 2025 marking his second consecutive season with a kick return score.
His resilience and versatility have positioned him as a valuable asset in Cincinnati’s offensive and special teams units, and he remains determined to secure a larger role as a wide receiver.
