Early Life and Education

Colin Jones was born on 21 March 1959 in Gorseinon, Swansea, Wales. Of white Welsh heritage and raised in a Christian household by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jones, he grew up in a working-class family of eight children.

His father worked underground as a miner before taking a job at Felindre Steelworks, and times were hard, though Jones has spoken warmly of a childhood in which the family was well looked after.

He followed his brothers Peter and Ken, both of whom boxed and won Welsh amateur titles, into the Penyrheol Amateur Boxing Club at the age of nine, just a few hundred yards from his home.

Jones attended Penyrheol Comprehensive School in Gorseinon, where he balanced his education with a rapidly developing boxing career.

He had his first fight at eleven, won three Welsh schoolboy titles, and went on to claim a Welsh senior title and two ABA British welterweight titles, compiling an amateur record of 104 wins against only six defeats.

Career

Colin Jones began his professional career in October 1977 at the age of eighteen, turning over under the management of Eddie Thomas and making a purse of £300 against Mike Copp.

Despite his explosive power, he often started fights slowly and was extended to the cards in three of his opening seven professional bouts before finding his rhythm.

His breakthrough came in April 1980 when he faced Kirkland Laing for the British welterweight title at the Wembley Conference Centre.

Laing had outboxed him for seven or eight rounds, but Jones pounced in the ninth, catching Laing with a devastating right hand to claim the title.

The rematch at the Royal Albert Hall a year later followed a near-identical pattern, with Jones finishing Laing in the ninth round with a left hook. In between, he added the Commonwealth title by stopping Mark Harris.

Jones’s career advanced rapidly as he established himself as one of the hardest punchers in British boxing. In November 1982, he travelled to Copenhagen and stopped Danish fighter Hans Henrik Palm in the second round to claim the European welterweight title.

That victory set up a shot at the vacant WBC world welterweight championship, and in March 1983 he faced the unbeaten Milton McCrory in Reno, Nevada. The fight was a brutal, closely contested battle that ended in a draw, with both fighters believing they had done enough to win.

A rematch followed later that year, and Jones suffered a narrow split-decision defeat in another fight that could have gone either way.

In 1985, he received a third opportunity at a world title, challenging the undefeated Don Curry in Birmingham for the WBC and IBF welterweight belts, but Curry was at the peak of his powers and stopped Jones in the fourth round on cuts, prompting his retirement at the age of twenty-six.

After hanging up his gloves, Jones transitioned into coaching and became a highly respected figure in Welsh amateur boxing.

He has served on the performance programme for Welsh Boxing for more than two decades, coaching at the Glasgow 2014, Gold Coast 2018, and Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, where Welsh boxers achieved outstanding success with eighteen medals, including five gold.

He also worked with the British Olympic squad and has been a familiar voice as a commentator and analyst.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the sport, Jones was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2020 Birthday Honours for services to boxing in Wales.

He was inducted into the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame in 1999 and remains actively involved in the Penyrheol Boxing Club where his journey began, mentoring the next generation of fighters.

Colin Jones is married to Debbie Jones, and the couple has three children and six grandchildren.
