Career

Tonga Fifita’s wrestling career began in 1978 when he transitioned from sumo wrestling under the guidance of Genichiro Tenryu and Takashi Ishikawa.

In 1985, he joined the WWF (now WWE) as King Tonga and quickly became a fan favorite, especially after his iconic body slam of Big John Studd during the “Body Slam Challenge.” His persona evolved in 1987 when he turned heel and adopted the name Haku, forming the tag team “The Islanders” with Tama (Tonga Kid).

Haku’s reign in WWE continued with notable achievements, including being crowned “King of the WWF” in 1988 and teaming up with André the Giant as part of The Colossal Connection. Together, they captured the WWF Tag Team Championship. After leaving WWF in 1992, Fifita transitioned to WCW, where he competed under Meng.

In WCW, Meng became known for his dominant presence and mastery of the Tongan Death Grip. He claimed the WCW Hardcore Championship and engaged in memorable rivalries. However, WCW’s financial struggles led to his departure in 2000.

Fifita briefly returned to WWF in 2001, surprising fans with a Royal Rumble appearance and forming a short-lived tag team with Rikishi. He spent his final months with WWF’s developmental territory before his release in 2002.
