Early life and education
Isaac Ross was born on October 27, 1984, in Ashburton, New Zealand. He was born to Jock Ross and Christine Ross, both of whom represented New Zealand in rugby. His ethnicity is Māori, and he is affiliated with Ngāti Kahungunu.
He grew up alongside his brothers, Adaam Ross and Jarrod Ross. His religion is Christianity. Ross attended Timaru Boys’ High School, where he played for the First XV before progressing to New Zealand age-group teams.
Career
Isaac Ross began his senior rugby career for Canterbury in 2006, quickly establishing himself as a promising lock. He entered Super Rugby the following year through the Crusaders, later spending the 2008 season at the Highlanders before returning to the Crusaders. His performances during the 2009 Super Rugby season earned him selection for the All Blacks.
Isaac Ross made his New Zealand Test debut against France in Dunedin on June 13, 2009, and went on to earn eight Test caps that year. He also represented the New Zealand Māori team between 2007 and 2010. In 2011, he joined the Chiefs before moving to Japan, where he spent almost a decade playing for the NTT Shining Arcs.
In 2020, Ross returned to New Zealand and helped the Tasman Mako win the Mitre 10 Cup. He then moved to the United States, joining the Austin Gilgronis as a player and forwards coach in 2021. After the Austin franchise folded, he joined the San Diego Legion, where he continued in a player-coach capacity. He finished his professional playing career in 2024.
