Early Life and Education
Jorge Polanco was born on July 5, 1993, in San Pedro de Macorís, a Dominican Republic city with a deep baseball pedigree. His father, Marino Polanco, had a brief stint in the San Francisco Giants organization before settling in New York,
while his mother, Ines, remained in the Dominican Republic with Jorge and his sister, Yinet. Polanco did not meet his father until he was four years old.
Much of his early guidance came from his grandfather, Maximo Polanco, who cared for him while running a property management business and helped him learn to swim as a child.
Baseball filled his childhood; by thirteen, he had set his sights on a professional career in the United States, and he signed with the Minnesota Twins as an international free agent in 2009 at age sixteen.
He attended no high school or college in the United States, embarking directly on a professional path. He is of Afro-Dominican descent and identifies as Christian.
Career
Jorge Polanco’s professional journey began in 2009 when the Minnesota Twins signed him as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic.
He worked through the minor leagues as a contact-oriented shortstop, earning a reputation for advanced strike-zone discipline, and made his Major League debut on June 26, 2014, at age twenty.
Over his first several seasons, he split time between shortstop and second base, gradually earning more regular playing time.
His breakthrough arrived in 2019, when he batted .295 with 40 doubles, 22 home runs, and 79 RBIs over 153 games, earning his first and only All-Star selection and finishing thirteenth in American League MVP voting.
Polanco remained a steady offensive contributor through 2023, his final season in Minnesota, compiling a .269/.334/.446 slash line with 16.8 bWAR across ten seasons with the Twins.
A trade sent him to the Seattle Mariners for the 2024 campaign, and after an injury-disrupted first year, he rebounded in 2025 with 26 home runs and 78 RBIs over 138 games, proving his power had not diminished.
In December 2025, he signed a two-year, $40 million contract with the New York Mets, positioning him as a veteran anchor for a retooling lineup.
Beyond his statistics, Polanco’s value lies in his adaptability—a switch-hitter who has played multiple infield positions and a clubhouse presence respected for his preparation and calm.
