Early life and education
Justin Sterner was born on August 29, 1996, in La Jolla, California, the son of Jeff Sterner and Carol Sterner. His brothers are Jack Sterner and Luke Sterner, who also played baseball at BYU.
He attended Dana Hills High School before serving a two-year religious mission in Apia, Samoa.
He later attended Brigham Young University, majoring in communications and playing baseball for the Cougars from 2018 to 2020.
Career
Justin Sterner developed as a pitcher at Dana Hills High School, where he posted a 1.12 ERA during his senior season.
After high school, he spent two years serving a missionary assignment in Samoa. He returned and joined Brigham Young University as a walk-on in 2018.
Justin Sterner went undrafted in the shortened 2020 MLB Draft but signed as an undrafted free agent with the Miami Marlins on August 3, 2020.
He was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays in 2021 and progressed through the Rays’ minor-league system, eventually reaching Triple-A Durham. Tampa Bay promoted him to the majors in May 2024.
Sterner made his MLB debut on May 31, 2024, against the Baltimore Orioles, pitching 2 scoreless innings and recording 2 strikeouts.
After spending more time in the minors during 2024, he was claimed off waivers by the Athletics in November 2024.
His first full MLB season came in 2025, when he finished with a 3.18 ERA across 59 appearances.
In 2026, Sterner remained part of the Athletics’ pitching staff. MLB records list him as having appeared in 46 games during the season, recording a 2–3 record, 6.12 ERA, 42.2 innings, 40 strikeouts, and a 1.38 WHIP. He is currently listed on the 15-day injured list.
