Early Life and Education
Kris Bryant was born on January 4, 1992, in Las Vegas, Nevada, to Mike and Sue Bryant. His father played in the Boston Red Sox minor league system and later sold his patio furniture business to coach his son.
Bryant grew up alongside his brother, Nick, and attended Bonanza High School in Las Vegas, where he batted .418 with 47 home runs over four varsity seasons and was named a USA Today All-USA first-team selection in 2010.
He was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 18th round that year but did not sign, instead enrolling at the University of San Diego. At San Diego, he won the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy in 2013 after leading the NCAA with 31 home runs.
Career
Kris Bryant’s professional career began when the Chicago Cubs selected him second overall in the 2013 MLB draft. He signed for a $6.7 million bonus and quickly became the top prospect in baseball, winning Minor League Player of the Year honors in 2014.
He made his MLB debut on April 17, 2015, and despite a service-time grievance that lingered for years, he immediately delivered, batting .275 with 26 home runs and 99 RBIs to win NL Rookie of the Year unanimously.
In 2016, Bryant produced one of the great sophomore seasons in baseball history, leading the NL with 121 runs and 7.3 WAR while hitting 39 home runs and driving in 102 runs. He was named NL MVP and caught the final out of the World Series, ending the Cubs’ 108-year championship drought.
He made four All-Star teams with Chicago (2015, 2016, 2019, 2021) and won the 2021 Hank Aaron Award before being traded to the Giants midseason.
In March 2022, he signed a seven-year, $182 million contract with the Colorado Rockies, but back and shoulder injuries have limited him to 159 games over his first three seasons in Colorado.
Despite the frustrations, Bryant remains a respected clubhouse leader and a two-time franchise cornerstone whose peak ranks among the best in modern baseball.
