Marcus Freeman was born on January 10, 1986, in Dayton, Ohio, United States, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Medical Center.

He was brought up by his parents, Michael Freeman (African American, U.S. Air Force veteran) and Chong Freeman (from South Korea), who met while his father served in the military and moved to Ohio in 1976.

He grew up with one older brother, Michael Freeman Jr. His ethnicity is mixed African American and Korean. His religion is Catholicism (converted in 2022).

He attended Wayne High School in Huber Heights, Ohio, where he was a Parade All-American linebacker.

He played college football at Ohio State University from 2004 to 2008 as a linebacker, earning a B.S. in 2007 and later a master’s degree in sports management in 2011.

Career

Marcus Freeman began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Ohio State in 2010. He coached linebackers at Kent State (2011–2012), Purdue (2013–2015, promoted to co-defensive coordinator in 2016), and Cincinnati (2017–2020 as defensive coordinator/linebackers).

In 2021, he joined Notre Dame as defensive coordinator/linebackers coach under Brian Kelly.

Following Kelly’s departure, Freeman was promoted to head coach on December 3, 2021, becoming the 30th head coach in Notre Dame history and one of the youngest at the time.

Under his leadership, Notre Dame achieved strong records, including a historic season with the most wins in program history, playoff advancement, and a national championship game appearance in 2025.
