Early Life and Education
Ryan O’Hearn was born on July 26, 1993, in Dunedin, Florida, and moved to the Dallas area at the start of his freshman year of high school. He is the son of Tom O’Hearn, a salesman and businessman, and Christine O’Hearn,
and he grew up alongside his older brother Michael Reid and his sister Caitlin. Baseball entered his life through watching his brother play, and he soon developed into a serious prospect.
He attended Frisco Wakeland High School in Frisco, Texas, where he was a second-team Baseball America All-American and the District 9-4A offensive player of the year after batting .505 with 15 home runs and 55 RBIs as a senior.
He then enrolled at Sam Houston State University, where he played college baseball and studied business, following in his father’s footsteps academically while emerging as a draft-worthy talent.
He is of white American descent with full-Irish ancestry on his father’s side and half-German, half-Irish heritage on his mother’s, and he identifies as Christian.
Career
Ryan O’Hearn’s professional path began when the Kansas City Royals selected him in the eighth round of the 2014 MLB draft, 243rd overall, out of Sam Houston State.
He spent four seasons climbing the minor league ladder before making his Major League debut on July 31, 2018, at age 25, and he homered in his second career at-bat.
His first month in the majors was electric—he finished the 2018 season with a .950 OPS in 44 games—but the league adjusted, and he endured a humbling three-year stretch from 2019 through 2022 in which he lost his starting job and bounced between the bench and the minors.
The turning point arrived in January 2023, when the Royals traded him to the Baltimore Orioles for cash. Working with Baltimore’s hitting coaches on mechanical adjustments, including a posture change, O’Hearn reinvented himself as a productive left-handed bat,
posting an .801 OPS in 2023 and a .761 OPS in 2024 before a breakout 2025 campaign earned him his first All-Star selection as the American League’s starting designated hitter.
He set career highs with a .281 average, 17 home runs, and 3.0 WAR, then signed a two-year, $29 million free-agent contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates in December 2025—the franchise’s largest free-agent deal for a position player in a decade.
His legacy is one of perseverance: a player who was designated for assignment twice and passed through waivers, only to rebuild his swing and his career into something lasting.
