Early Life and Education
Shelby Blackstock was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on 23 February 1990. Of American origin and raised in a Christian household, he is the only biological child of country music superstar Reba McEntire and her then-husband, manager Narvel Blackstock.
He grew up alongside three older half-siblings—Brandon, Shawna Rene, and Chassidy Celeste—and spent much of his childhood immersed in the music scene, touring with his parents and working as a roadie from an early age.
Blackstock attended an independent, progressive high school in Los Angeles before enrolling at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
His passion for cars had been evident since childhood, when he would identify vehicle makes and models from the passenger seat, and it was during his freshman year of college that he seized on a plan to pursue racing seriously: he would complete his first year if his parents sent him to a racing school.
Career
Shelby Blackstock began his racing journey after a four-day course at the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving in Phoenix, which he described as the moment he knew he had found his calling.
He followed it with the Skip Barber Fast Pass programme, racing formula cars and Mazda MX-5s in multiple events per day to catch up with more experienced competitors.
In 2011, he claimed two wins in the Skip Barber Summer Series and finished fifth in the National Series, while also competing in Formula Ford 1600 and the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.
He also spent time driving a Mustang for Roush Racing, where he was required to work in the shop and build the car he drove, an experience that deepened his understanding of the machinery and made him a more valuable driver.
Blackstock joined the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship with Andretti Autosport in 2012, finishing eighth in the standings with six top-ten finishes, including a fourth-place result at Road America and a fifth at Mid-Ohio.
He graduated to the Pro Mazda Championship in 2013 and spent two seasons with Andretti, earning one victory, three pole positions, 13 podiums, and 18 top-five finishes.
In December 2014, Andretti Autosport announced his promotion to Indy Lights for the 2015 season, making him the third driver to advance through the Mazda Road to Indy programme into Indy Lights with the team.
He drove the No. 51 entry and was recognised at the 2015 Mazda Road to Indy awards banquet with a commemorative ring for completing all three rungs of the ladder system.
After his open-wheel career, Blackstock transitioned into GT racing and competed in the GT World Challenge America, where he led the championship alongside co-driver Trent Hindman in the Racers Edge Motorsports Acura NSX GT3 Evo.
He retired from professional racing after the 2017 season and shifted his focus to business.
He worked as a business development manager at Global Source Advisors starting in March 2020 before becoming principal and co-founder of B&R Developments, a Texas-based construction and real estate firm.
Through B&R Lebanon Investments with business partner Austin Recht, he secured a $12 million mortgage for a 407-acre residential development in Wilson County, Tennessee, called Cumberland Oaks.
