Beginning his career as an educator at Johannesburg Secondary School, Komphela‘s upbringing was shaped by the guidance and support of his parents, Jack Koyi Koyo and Nomalanga Komphela. He also has a brother named Butana Komphela, a renowned South African politician, among his eleven siblings.

Career

Steve Komphela initiated his professional football journey with Klerksdorp City in the NSL Second Division before moving to Qwa Qwa Stars, contributing to their promotion to the National Soccer League. His NSL debut against Witbank Aces on February 9, 1986, started a distinguished career.

Transitioning to coaching in 2002 as the manager of Manning Rangers F.C., Komphela managed various clubs until 2015. A significant turn occurred when he signed a three-year contract with Kaizer Chiefs in 2015, remaining their manager.

While coaching Kaizer Chiefs, Steve Komphela faced challenges, especially as the team needed to secure trophies by July 2018. Under mounting pressure, exacerbated by fan protests and online criticism, he resigned, subsequently joining the Bloemfontein Celtics.
