His NHL career included spells at the Phoenix Coyotes, Nashville Predators, New York Islanders, Minnesota Wild, and Colorado Avalanche. He also became an important contributor for the Milwaukee Admirals, helping the team win the 2004 Calder Cup.

During the 2005–06 season, Smith played for the New York Islanders and their AHL affiliate, Bridgeport. He joined the Minnesota Wild organization in 2006 and later spent part of the 2007–08 season in Colorado, recording three assists in 25 NHL games for the Avalanche.

In 2008, he signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning organization before returning to Phoenix during the season.

Wyatt Smith later joined the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, producing a career-best 48 points in 76 AHL games during the 2009–10 season. In 2010, he signed with the Boston Bruins and played for the Providence Bruins.

He finished his professional playing career in Europe, joining ERC Ingolstadt of Germany’s Deutsche Eishockey Liga. Across his NHL career, he appeared in 211 games, scoring 10 goals and recording 22 assists.
