Legal Twist: Court Puts Brakes on Sanusi II’s Return as Kano Emir Amidst Legal Battle

In Kano, Justice Ahmad Liman of the Federal High Court has intervened, ordering a halt to implementing the recently amended Kano Emirate law of 2024. This judicial maneuver effectively sidelines the anticipated reinstatement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.

The court’s decision stems from a lawsuit initiated by Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan Agundi (Sarkin Dawaki Babba) against the Kano State government. Dan Agundi sought judicial intervention to suspend the new law’s enactment by the Kano State House of Assembly.

Following careful deliberation, Justice Liman issued a sweeping order suspending the implementation and operation of the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law, 2024 (1445 A.H). This injunction extends to all facets of the Emirate Councils, as established under the provisions of the Kano State Emirate Council Law, 2019 (1441 A.H).

Moreover, the court restrained specific respondents from executing, implementing, or enforcing the provisions of the contentious law. To maintain the status quo, the court also ordered the preservation of the subject matter pending the full adjudication.

This legal twist follows the Kano State House of Assembly’s repeal of the State’s Emirate Council Law 2019, which led to the creation of four additional emirate councils in the state. Subsequently, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf signed the amended Bill into law, prompting the dethronement of Emir Aminu Ado Bayero and the purported reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano.

However, with the court’s injunction, the legal rollercoaster surrounding Sanusi II‘s fate takes another unpredictable turn, leaving the final resolution in the balance as the legal battle unfolds.
