Mr. Scales was born on Feb. 15, 1968, in St. Louis. He worked as a businessman, and one profile reported that he ran a logistics company called Pro Escort, though the family has not detailed his career. Before his marriage to Ms. Braxton, he was married to Amy Fitzmaurice, a personal trainer and former bodybuilder. They have three sons, Brendan Scales, Cameron Scales and Evan Scales.

He and Ms. Braxton were introduced by a mutual friend from St. Louis and built their relationship over long distances. Ms. Braxton told Essence in 2019 that she began falling for him through their conversations, and that she found herself missing him whenever they were not talking.

The courtship came soon after a painful chapter: her former husband, Gabe Solis, died of cancer on Dec. 20, 2018, at 43. Mr. Solis had been married to Ms. Braxton for 12 years and helped raise her sons, Eric Mojica and Caleb Mojica, from a previous relationship.

Mr. Scales proposed during a Braxton family trip to California’s Napa Valley, organized around the birthdays of Ms. Braxton’s sisters Tamar Braxton and Traci Braxton. The couple married in December 2019 in St. Louis.

Their romance played out publicly on “Braxton Family Values,” the WE tv series that followed the Braxton sisters, and later on its successor, “The Braxtons.” In August 2024, the couple discussed grief candidly on a companion podcast, “The Braxtons Clips & Cocktails.” Ms. Braxton said she had felt punished for mourning Mr. Solis. Mr. Scales acknowledged he had been angry at the time, and the exchange drew heavy discussion among viewers.

His health surfaced on camera in an episode of “The Braxtons” that aired in October 2025. Ms. Braxton left her sister Towanda Braxton’s bachelorette party in Mexico after learning he had been taken to urgent care. Mr. Scales explained that a heart valve problem had caused fluid to build up in his lungs and around his heart, and said he would not have survived without professional help.

Ms. Braxton, visibly shaken, said she could not bear to lose anyone else. After the scare, she overhauled the household pantry to encourage healthier eating. The family has not said whether his death was related to that condition.

Ms. Braxton, born Dec. 3, 1974, in Severn, Md., is one of the five Braxton sisters, a group that includes the Grammy-winning singer Toni Braxton, Traci Braxton, Towanda Braxton and Tamar Braxton.

She performed alongside her sisters in the 1990s as part of the group The Braxtons, and returned to the spotlight with them when “Braxton Family Values” premiered in 2011. Traci Braxton died in 2022, one of several losses the family has navigated in recent years.

Funeral arrangements had not been announced.
