The Nigerian naira traded at ₦1,405 to buy and ₦1,415 to sell against the United States dollar in the parallel market, popularly known as the Aboki or black market, on Saturday, 1st August 2026.

Currency dealers operating in major commercial centres including Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt quoted these rates as demand for the greenback remained firm while supply stayed relatively constrained in the informal segment.

This level marked a modest upward adjustment from the previous session, with the selling rate rising notably according to parallel market trackers. Traders attributed the movement to continued pressure from importers seeking foreign exchange for goods and individuals meeting overseas obligations such as school fees, medical bills and remittances. The official Central Bank of Nigeria rate meanwhile hovered around ₦1,366.71 to the dollar, leaving a premium of roughly ₦48 or about 3.4 per cent between the official window and the street market.

Activity in the parallel market remained brisk throughout the day as bureau de change operators and street dealers handled transactions outside formal banking channels. Market participants noted that the naira’s performance continues to reflect broader liquidity conditions in the foreign exchange space, with interbank turnover and reserve levels also influencing sentiment.

Analysts observing the gap between the two markets have pointed out that sustained demand and limited official supply often keep the parallel rate elevated, prompting many businesses and individuals to turn to Aboki channels for quicker access to dollars.

The latest figures come against a backdrop of ongoing efforts by monetary authorities to improve forex availability through official windows. Nonetheless, the parallel market rate remains a key daily reference point for millions of Nigerians who rely on it for practical transactions. As of the close of trading on 1st August 2026, the Aboki dollar continued to command ₦1,415 on the sell side, underscoring the persistent dual-market reality in the country’s foreign exchange landscape.
