The parallel market exchange rate for the Nigerian naira against the United States dollar stood at approximately ₦1,405 to ₦1,411 per dollar on Thursday, 20 August 2026, according to data compiled from black market and bureau de change operators popularly known as Aboki traders.

Dealers in major commercial centres including Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt quoted buying rates near ₦1,405 while selling rates hovered around ₦1,411, though slight variations existed depending on location, transaction volume and individual operators.

This left a gap of roughly ₦60 to ₦70 against the official Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market rate, which traded in the region of ₦1,344 to ₦1,350 per dollar earlier in the day. Market observers attributed the relative stability in the parallel segment to improved dollar liquidity flowing from recent Central Bank of Nigeria interventions and higher interbank turnover recorded in previous sessions.

The naira had shown signs of strength in the official window in recent days, reaching multi-month highs before a modest pullback, yet demand from importers, travellers and students seeking foreign exchange for fees continued to sustain the premium in the street market.

Traders reported steady but not aggressive activity on Thursday morning, with some noting that larger cash transactions could still secure marginally better rates. The spread between official and parallel rates remains a key feature of Nigeria’s foreign exchange landscape, reflecting ongoing differences in access to dollars through formal banking channels versus informal and bureau de change sources.

Rates are subject to intraday fluctuations as supply and demand conditions evolve, and individuals are advised to confirm current quotes with trusted dealers before any transaction.
