Buying rates hovered close to ₦1,395, leaving black market dealers in Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt trading within a narrow band as the week closed.

At the official Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market, the naira traded at approximately ₦1,349.06 to the dollar in early trading on Friday, while the most recent confirmed official rate from Thursday’s session stood at ₦1,344.45. That places the spread between the parallel and official markets at roughly ₦56 to ₦60 per dollar, a gap that has narrowed slightly from levels recorded earlier in the month.

Parallel market data through the week showed the dollar moving from around ₦1,410 on 19th August to about ₦1,404 on 20th August, before settling near ₦1,405 on Friday.

The official market has meanwhile shown relative strength, with the naira climbing to ₦1,343.32 per dollar on 18th August, a move analysts linked to improved dollar liquidity and continued interventions by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

External reserves have provided additional support for the currency, with figures reported earlier in the week placing reserves near a 17-year high above 52 billion dollars. Traders say this buffer, combined with steadier inflows at the official window, has helped keep the parallel market from the sharper swings that characterised earlier periods in the year.

Bureau de Change operators and independent dealers continue to note that rates vary by location and by time of day, since aboki quotes are informal and can shift several times before markets close.

For Nigerians who depend on the black market for travel expenses, school fees, subscriptions, remittances and imports, actual rates obtained from individual dealers may differ from the average figures reported here, and comparing quotes across sources remains advisable before any transaction.
