The parallel market rate for the US dollar against the naira climbed on Wednesday, 2 September 2026, as Bureau de Change operators and street dealers in Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt quoted a sell price of ₦1,410 and a buy price of ₦1,400.

That move represented a rise of about 4 percent from the previous day’s levels and left the unofficial market trading at a premium of roughly 5.5 to 6 percent over the official window.

At the Central Bank of Nigeria’s NAFEM window the dollar was listed near ₦1,329, meaning a customer buying $100 on the street would pay about ₦141,000 while the same amount at the official rate would cost closer to ₦132,900.

The gap of several thousand naira per hundred dollars continues to draw importers, travellers and households that cannot readily access bank allocations.

Dealers attributed the day’s jump to stronger demand at the start of the month and thinner dollar supply in some locations, even as Nigeria’s external reserves have remained relatively high in recent weeks.

Rates still vary by city, transaction size and time of day, so traders routinely shop among several operators before settling. The pound and euro also moved in the parallel market, trading near ₦1,900 and ₦1,605 respectively on the sell side.

Anyone exchanging cash is advised to confirm the live quote on the day, as black-market prices can shift within hours and the spread between buying and selling remains a few naira per dollar. Official bank channels continue to offer the lower published rate for eligible transactions, while the street market remains the fallback for those who need dollars immediately.
