I have spent the better part of twelve years working in web security and digital privacy, and the single most consistent mistake I see, from journalists protecting sources to everyday users who just want to browse without being followed, is the belief that clearing cookies solves the tracking problem. It solves about thirty per cent of it. The other seventy per cent is a different beast entirely.
The Death of the Cookie and What Replaced It
Cookies have been the backbone of web tracking since Lou Montulli invented them in 1994, originally as a humble mechanism to help shopping carts remember what you put in them.

They look at gait, height, voice pattern, and the specific wear on the soles of shoes. No single detail confirms identity, but assembled together, the profile becomes statistically irrefutable.
Browser fingerprinting is a tracking technique that identifies users based on the unique configuration of their browser and device, rather than traditional cookies. Instead of asking “who are you,” fingerprinting asks “what does your browser look like.”
The answer to that question turns out to be extraordinarily specific. Each individual signal is not unique on its own. Millions of people have a 1920×1080 screen. Millions use Chrome on Windows. But when you combine thirteen or more signals together, the resulting fingerprint is statistically unique for 83 to 90 per cent of users, according to research from AmIUnique.org and the EFF’s Panopticlick project.
That is not a theoretical figure. Princeton researchers tested the top 10,000 websites and found fingerprinting scripts on 88 percent of them. The Electronic Frontier Foundation tested browsers directly and found 83 percent had a fingerprint unique enough to track with no cookies at all.

When you visit a website, it can gather your operating system, browser version, screen resolution, language settings, time zone, installed extensions, keyboard layout, WebGL and audio processing capabilities, battery status, available device memory, and whether cookies are even enabled. All of this happens through JavaScript executing the moment the page loads silently, often before you have scrolled a single pixel.
What makes the collection particularly unsettling is not any single item on that list. It is the combination. A MacBook Pro running macOS Sonoma with a 2560×1664 display, set to West Africa Time, using Chrome 124, with twelve fonts installed that include a rare design typeface you downloaded for a freelance project two years ago, running an ad blocker extension, and with a specific GPU rendering signature from your particular graphics card model: that description now fits you, and possibly only you, among hundreds of millions of users.
Canvas Fingerprinting: The Technique That Changed Everything
Canvas fingerprinting deserves its own section because it is, in the opinion of most privacy researchers who have looked at this seriously, the most quietly effective tracking method ever deployed at scale.
Here is how it works. Your browser contains an HTML5 Canvas element, which was designed to render graphics dynamically using JavaScript. When a website runs a canvas fingerprinting script, it draws an invisible image, usually a string of text rendered with a specific font and colour gradient, and then reads back the pixel data. The subtle differences in how individual GPUs and graphics drivers render that image produce a signature that is almost entirely unique to your hardware and software combination.
Unlike cookies, which store identifiable data on your machine and can be deleted or blocked, browser fingerprinting is a passive, behind-the-scenes method of tracking. JavaScript code running on websites collects subtle signals and stitches them together into a unique fingerprint of your device, and users have no visibility into this tracking.
I ran canvas fingerprint tests on five different laptops in my office once, all running the same version of Chrome on the same operating system. Every single one produced a different fingerprint. Same browser. Same OS. Different machines. That result taught me more about the precision of this technique than any research paper had.
WebGL and Audio Fingerprinting: Going Deeper Into the Hardware

When a fingerprinting script processes an audio signal through the AudioContext API, the output varies slightly depending on how your device’s audio stack handles the signal. Those variations are consistent for a given device and different between devices, producing yet another stable identifier.
Brave actively randomizes canvas, WebGL, audio, and font fingerprinting vectors on every page load, making it the only mainstream browser with built-in fingerprint randomization that changes per session. The fact that a major browser built a dedicated system to fight these specific techniques tells you something important about how serious and widespread the problem has become.
Font Enumeration and Why Your Font Library Is a Privacy Problem
This one surprises people every time I bring it up in security briefings. The fonts installed on your computer are a surprisingly powerful identifier.
Most computers ship with a standard set of system fonts. But if you have ever installed Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, a speciality typography tool, or even certain games, you have likely added fonts to your system that are not part of the standard distribution.
A website can probe your browser to determine which fonts are available by measuring how text renders at specific sizes and weights, and the resulting list of installed fonts, when combined with other signals, narrows your identity considerably.
A graphic designer who has installed fifty custom fonts for client work is carrying a font fingerprint that is essentially unique. A developer who installed a programming font and a handful of display faces is carrying a different, also distinctive, signature. There is no obvious way to know this is happening, no permission dialogue, no visible transaction.
How the Fingerprint Gets Assembled and Stored
Understanding the collection is one thing. Understanding what happens next is where the real privacy implications become clear.
Once all the pieces are gathered, they are combined into a single unique identifier, usually in the form of a hash. This fingerprint does not store your name or email, but it can still be used to recognize you across different visits, even if you have cleared your cookies or switched to private mode.
That hash becomes your shadow identity on whatever network of sites uses the same fingerprinting service. And because the major advertising and analytics providers are embedded across thousands of websites simultaneously, the same hash follows you from a cooking blog to a news site to a retail store, stitching together a behavioural profile that grows richer with every visit.
Data brokers purchase fingerprint-linked browsing profiles and combine them with offline data. A 2025 investigation found that some brokers could link anonymous browsing sessions to real names and addresses through fingerprint data alone.
That is the moment when “anonymous” browsing stops being anonymous in any meaningful sense. Your name was never in the fingerprint. But your fingerprint led to your name anyway.
Who Uses Browser Fingerprinting and Why
The honest answer is: almost everyone with a significant digital presence, and for reasons that range from entirely legitimate to deeply troubling.
Advertising Networks and Behavioural Targeting
This is the most pervasive use case, and it is the one most directly connected to the revenue model of the modern internet.
Once your fingerprint has been taken, you can be tracked across the internet. If one entity, an advertiser, for example, has your fingerprint from one website and sees the same fingerprint visit another website where the advertiser is also running ads, they know it is the same person on both occasions.
The financial stakes attached to that recognition are not trivial. Researchers found that advertisers are willing to pay up to 40 percent more to show ads to users they recognize and can profile. That premium explains why fingerprinting scripts proliferate so aggressively across the web, even as cookies face increasing restrictions. The economic incentive has not shrunk. Only the available methods have shifted.
Banks and Fraud Detection
Not every use of fingerprinting is predatory. Banks and financial institutions use device fingerprinting as a genuine security layer, and it works.
Banks use fingerprinting as a fraud signal. A sudden change in fingerprint triggers verification challenges. If you have ever been asked to re-verify your identity after logging into your bank from a new device, part of what triggered that prompt was likely a fingerprint mismatch. Your credentials matched, but your device signature did not. That is a legitimate and often effective fraud prevention mechanism.
The complication is that the same infrastructure used by your bank for fraud detection is structurally identical to the infrastructure used by ad networks for behavioural profiling. The technology does not distinguish between benign and malicious intent. How it is used depends entirely on the organization deploying it.
Paywalls, Free Trials, and Article Limits
News sites and streaming platforms use fingerprinting to enforce article limits and free trial periods. Clearing cookies resets the counter, but fingerprinting does not.
If you have tried to get around a newspaper’s five-free-articles limit by opening a private window, you have likely noticed it does not always work. The fingerprint persists across private and regular browsing sessions because it is not stored in your browser’s data; it is calculated from your browser’s characteristics, which do not change when you open a new window.
Data Brokers: The Shadow Industry
Data brokers are the part of this ecosystem that most people never think about and that arguably poses the greatest long-term privacy risk.
These companies sit in the background, purchasing behavioural data from multiple sources, including fingerprint-linked browsing profiles, and assembling comprehensive dossiers on individuals that can include location history, purchasing patterns, political interests, health-related browsing, and financial behaviour.
The troubling dimension is that there is no direct relationship between you and these companies. You have never agreed to their terms of service. You have never consented to their data collection.
Your fingerprint simply showed up in data sets they purchased from publishers and ad networks, and now it is part of a commercial profile that can be sold to insurers, employers, landlords, and political campaigns.
The VPN Myth: Why Your IP Masking Does Nothing About Fingerprinting
This is the single most important thing to understand if you are serious about browser privacy, and it is the piece of information that most VPN marketing would prefer you did not know.
A VPN changes your IP address. That is genuinely useful for some privacy purposes, including hiding your general location from websites and preventing your ISP from logging your browsing activity. But browser fingerprinting does not rely on your IP address.
Your browser reports your real timezone even behind a VPN. A mismatch between your IP geolocation and timezone is actually a classic VPN detection signal. So a VPN not only fails to mask your fingerprint, it can actually make your presence more conspicuous to sophisticated tracking systems that flag the contradiction between a claimed location and local system settings.
The first time I heard a client say, “I use a VPN so I’m fine,” I had to take a breath before responding. A VPN is a layer of protection, not a privacy solution. Treating it as the latter is like installing a deadbolt on a glass door and calling the house secure.
Why Incognito Mode Is Not Protecting You
Incognito mode, private browsing, whatever your browser calls it: it is useful, but it has been systematically misrepresented in popular understanding.
Browser fingerprints are persistent; you cannot delete them like cookies. They are cross-site, meaning the same fingerprint works across different websites. They work everywhere, even in private or incognito mode. They require no consent, and most privacy regulations do not cover fingerprinting.
Private browsing prevents your browser from storing a local history of your session. It does not change any of the hardware and software characteristics that fingerprinting scripts read. Your GPU, your fonts, your screen resolution, your timezone, your audio hardware: none of those change when you open a private window. The fingerprint is identical in private mode to what it is in regular mode.
This is not a flaw in the private browsing feature. It was never designed to prevent fingerprinting. It was designed to prevent your browser from storing local records of your activity. The expectation that it provides anonymity against external tracking is a product of poor communication from browser vendors, not a technical failure of the feature itself.
The Legal Landscape: A Gray Zone With Consequences
Browser fingerprinting occupies an uncomfortable position in the global privacy regulatory framework, and that discomfort has been exploited systematically.
Under GDPR, browser fingerprinting falls under the management of personal data and thus requires consent. Usually, websites ask permission to do this while also asking for cookie consent, expressed in many ways, but usually following along the lines of “unique device characteristics” or “device identifiers.”
The problem is that enforcement has been inconsistent at best. Websites routinely deploy fingerprinting scripts without disclosing them in any meaningful way. The vague language in many consent management platforms, “we may collect information about your device for personalization and security purposes,” does not clearly communicate that your GPU rendering signature and installed fonts are being hashed into a persistent identifier.
The EU’s ePrivacy Directive specifically covers browser fingerprinting and requires consent, but enforcement has been inconsistent. The upcoming ePrivacy Regulation, still in progress as of 2026, is expected to tighten this significantly.
In the United States, the legal picture is even murkier. There is no single federal law that specifically addresses browser fingerprinting. California’s consumer privacy laws provide some coverage, but enforcement requires users to know they have been tracked in the first place, which fingerprinting, by design, prevents.
What Actually Protects You Against Browser Fingerprinting
Here is where I have to be direct about something the privacy industry does not always say clearly: there is no perfect solution. Fingerprinting is deeply embedded in how browsers communicate with servers. But there are meaningful, practical layers of protection that make you harder to track.
Browser Choice Matters More Than You Think
Firefox’s Enhanced Tracking Protection in strict mode blocks known fingerprinting scripts and restricts font enumeration. It is not as comprehensive as Brave but is a reasonable default for everyday use.
For users who want the strongest available protection, Brave is the current gold standard among mainstream browsers, and Tor Browser sits at the opposite extreme for high-sensitivity use cases.
Tor makes every user appear identical by standardizing all fingerprinting vectors. The trade-off is significantly slower browsing, and it is recommended only for high-sensitivity use cases.
The Mullvad Browser, developed in collaboration with the Tor Project, offers a middle path: strong fingerprint standardization without the speed penalty of routing through the Tor network.
Extensions That Actually Help
CanvasBlocker is a Firefox extension that randomizes canvas fingerprinting output. Combined with uBlock Origin set to a strict blocking list, this significantly reduces the information available to fingerprinting scripts without breaking most websites in the way that total script blocking would.
The caveat is that some protection tools can increase your uniqueness rather than reduce it. A browser with an unusual combination of extensions can itself become a distinctive identifier. The goal of effective fingerprint protection is standardization, making your browser look like many other browsers, not radical customization that makes you stand out more.
Practical Habits That Actually Move the Needle
Beyond browser choice and extensions, there are behavioural adjustments that carry real weight. Using separate browsers for different activity categories, one for work, one for personal browsing, and one for any activity where privacy is paramount, prevents the cross-contamination of fingerprint profiles across contexts.
Keeping extension lists minimal reduces the distinctiveness of your browser profile. Updating your operating system and browser regularly changes some fingerprint components, though tracking networks have systems to link updated fingerprints to previous ones when other signals remain consistent.
The Research That Changed How Seriously This Is Taken
For years, privacy advocates argued that browser fingerprinting was being used for real-world tracking, and the advertising industry maintained there was no proof of active use, only the presence of fingerprinting scripts.
A team of five researchers from Texas A&M University, Johns Hopkins University, and F5 Inc. presented a paper at the 2025 ACM Web Conference in Sydney titled “The First Early Evidence of the Use of Browser Fingerprinting for Online Tracking.”
Using a novel tool they developed called FPTrace, the researchers manipulated browser fingerprints and monitored how ad behaviour changed in response. Their data confirmed a direct correlation between browser fingerprint variations and ad bidding behaviour, establishing that fingerprinting is being used for real-world tracking and targeting.
Researchers also documented 378 instances of cookie restoration linked to fingerprinting behaviour across 90 unique cookie-host combinations. That last detail is particularly important: fingerprinting was not only being used as a standalone tracker, but it was also being used to restore cookies that users had deliberately deleted. The surveillance loop was being closed by the tracking system itself.
Where This Technology Is Going
In 2026, browser fingerprinting has become a bigger part of how websites recognize users, score risk, and decide whether a session looks normal.
It matters for privacy, but it also matters for business. Marketing teams, e-commerce operators, cybersecurity teams, and agencies now work in an internet environment where browser identity can affect access, trust, and account stability.
The trajectory is not encouraging for user privacy. As third-party cookies become less available and privacy-conscious users become more adept at basic countermeasures, the financial incentive to deploy more sophisticated, harder-to-detect tracking methods increases.
Fingerprinting scripts are already collecting more than a dozen signals per session. Cross-device fingerprinting, which attempts to link your phone, laptop, and tablet into a single behavioural profile, is an active area of development.
The web standards bodies and browser vendors have not been passive. Proposals to restrict access to high-entropy fingerprinting APIs are moving through standards committees.
Chrome has implemented privacy sandbox initiatives that, whatever their other implications, do reduce some fingerprinting surface area. Firefox and Safari continue to tighten access to APIs that fingerprinting scripts exploit.
But the history of this particular arms race is not encouraging. Every time a tracking vector gets restricted, the industry finds another one. The number of available signals is large, the economic incentive to exploit them is enormous, and the average user is operating without any clear visibility into what is being collected.
What You Should Actually Take Away From This
The goal of understanding browser fingerprinting is not paranoia. It is an accurate calibration. Most people either over-trust the tools they use for privacy or under-trust the web entirely, and both positions lead to bad decisions.
The honest summary is this: if you are an ordinary user, a combination of a privacy-respecting browser, a minimal extension profile, and basic browsing hygiene will meaningfully reduce your fingerprint exposure without requiring significant changes to how you use the internet.
If you are a journalist, activist, researcher, or anyone with a genuine adversarial threat model, the bar is higher, and Tor Browser or a well-configured Mullvad setup is the appropriate starting point.
What you should not do is believe that clearing your cookies and opening an incognito tab has made you invisible. Those tools have real value in the contexts for which they were designed. Browser fingerprinting operates in a different layer entirely, one that most of the privacy guidance most people encounter was simply not built to address.
The tracking industry has had a twelve-year head start on public awareness of this technology. Closing that gap starts with knowing it exists.
