Evan Handler is now 64 years old and was born on January 10, 1961, in New York City to secular Jewish parents Enid Irene, a mental health administrator, and Murry Raymond Handler, an agency owner and advertising designer.
He grew up in the Town of Cortlandt near Croton-on-Hudson in New York. He has an older brother, Lowell, who would later become an author and photographer, and a sister, Lillian.
Handler attended Hendrick Hudson High School in Montrose, New York, graduating a year early in 1978. Shortly after, he moved back to New York City and interned at the Chelsea Theater Center, where he appeared in Off-Broadway productions such as Biography: A Game and Strider: The Story of a Horse.
In 1979, he enrolled in the Juilliard School’s Drama Division (Group 12) but left the four-year program in 1981—after two years—when he was cast in the film Taps.

On television, he took on guest and recurring roles in series including Miami Vice, Law & Order, and Six Feet Under, but his breakthrough came in 2002 when he was cast as Harry Goldenblatt on Sex and the City. Following that, he gained further popularity as Charlie Runkle on Californication (2007–2014).
Handler’s stage work includes Off-Broadway credits early in his career and a notable exit from the Broadway play I Hate Hamlet in 1991 when co-star Nicol Williamson struck him during a fight sequence.
