Raised on a prawn farm in the Australian outback, the family later moved to Melbourne after the farm went bankrupt, where his father opened a hardware shop. Elliot attended Pinewood Primary School and Haileybury College.

He studied various arts including photography, painting, and pottery before completing a postgraduate diploma in film and television (specialising in animation) at the Victorian College of the Arts in 1996.

Born with a hereditary physiological tremor, he incorporated its organic quality into his animation style. He is of Australian origin, and his religion is Christianity.

Career

Adam Elliot began making stop-motion films while studying at the Victorian College of the Arts, starting with the short Uncle (1996), followed by Cousin (1998/1999) and Brother (1999/2000).

These early works established his signature style of handmade clay animation based loosely on family and friends.

His breakthrough came with the short Harvie Krumpet (2003), which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2004—the first such win by an openly LGBT+ filmmaker in that category.

His first feature, Mary and Max (2009), premiered as the opening-night film at the Sundance Film Festival and received widespread critical acclaim.

He followed it with the short Ernie Biscuit (2015) before returning with the feature Memoir of a Snail (2024), which earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature and the Cristal Award at Annecy.

Elliot works exclusively with traditional in-camera techniques, handcrafting every prop, set, and character without CGI. His films have screened at hundreds of festivals and collected more than 100 awards.

He has also published The A–Z of Unfortunate Dogs (2010).
