Early Life and Education
Adam Buxton first saw the light of day on 7 June 1969 in Shepherd’s Bush, London, to parents Nigel Buxton, a travel writer and wine critic, and Valerie Birrell, who was Chilean and had worked as an airline stewardess.
He has a younger brother, David Buxton, and a sister, Clare. He spent part of his childhood in Wales and was educated at Windlesham House School in West Sussex before attending Westminster School in London, where he formed lasting friendships with Joe Cornish and Louis Theroux.
After underperforming in his A-levels, he briefly attended the University of Warwick for two terms before dropping out and studying sculpture at Cheltenham College of Art. He is British, with Chilean maternal heritage, and his religion is Christianity.
Career
Adam Buxton began his professional career in the mid-1990s by submitting homemade comedy videos to Channel 4’s Takeover TV. The tapes impressed producers, leading to him hosting episodes of the series in 1995.
Together with school friend Joe Cornish, he developed the double act Adam and Joe, which became the Channel 4 sketch series The Adam and Joe Show, which ran for four series between 1996 and 2001.
The show’s low-budget, satirical recreations of films and popular culture using soft toys and home-video techniques quickly earned a cult following and a Royal Television Society Award for Best Newcomer in 1998.
The pair also published a companion book and later moved into radio, presenting on XFM before transferring to BBC Radio 6 Music.
During the 2000s and early 2010s, Buxton expanded his range considerably. He co-wrote and starred in the Channel 4 mini-series The Last Chancers, performed the character show I, Pavel at the Edinburgh Festival, and appeared in films including Hot Fuzz, Stardust and Son of Rambow.
He directed music videos for Radiohead and launched the live music-video commentary show BUG, which later became a television series on Sky Atlantic. With Cornish, he continued radio work on 6 Music, winning Sony Radio Academy Awards.
In 2015 he launched The Adam Buxton Podcast, a gentle, conversational interview series recorded largely while walking his dog, which grew into one of the United Kingdom’s most popular comedy podcasts and attracted high-profile guests ranging from Paul McCartney to leading authors and scientists.
In later years, Buxton has focused on writing, music and continued podcasting. His first memoir, Ramble Book, appeared in 2020 and became a bestseller; the follow-up, I Love You, Byeee, was published in 2025.
He released the EP Science Songs in 2018, and his debut album Buckle Up in 2025, performing live with a band that includes members of Metronomy.
