Alan Autry was born on July 31, 1952, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Carl Autry and Verna Brown Autry. His parents separated when he was about one year old, after which his name became Carlos Brown and he moved to California alongside his mother and stepfather, Joe Duty. The family lived in migrant-worker camps across the San Joaquin Valley before settling in Riverdale when Alan was 12.
