Early Life and Education

His father had German or Polish ancestry, while his mother worked in publicity and became the first publicity director of Mercury Records.
Conrad attended several Chicago-area schools before leaving formal education at age 15 to work. He later studied theater arts at Northwestern University.
Growing up in Chicago, Conrad developed interests in football, boxing, singing, and acting. Before establishing himself in Hollywood, he worked as a milk-truck driver, loading-dock worker, and nightclub singer.
He also pursued amateur boxing, eventually recording an undefeated professional record of 4–0–1. His early experiences working ordinary jobs helped shape the tough, athletic image that later became central to his screen career.
Career
Conrad began pursuing acting professionally in the 1950s, moving from small film appearances into television. His friendship with actor Nick Adams helped him obtain early Hollywood opportunities, and he eventually signed a contract at Warner Bros. Television.
His breakthrough came in 1959 when he was cast as private investigator Tom Lopaka in Hawaiian Eye, a role that made him a television star.
His defining role arrived in 1965, when he began playing Secret Service agent James T. West in The Wild Wild West. The CBS adventure series ran until 1969 and became Conrad’s signature production.
He was also noted for performing many of his own stunts, including dangerous fight sequences that resulted in several injuries.
During the 1970s, Conrad starred in The D.A., Assignment: Vienna, and Baa Baa Black Sheep, where he portrayed real-life World War II aviator Gregory “Pappy” Boyington.
He later appeared in Centennial, A Man Called Sloane, High Mountain Rangers, Jesse Hawkes, and numerous television films. His film credits included The Lady in Red, Wrong Is Right, Moving Violations, and Jingle All the Way.
Robert Conrad also worked as a producer and director, frequently involving members of his family in his productions. In 2008, he began hosting The PM Show with Robert Conrad, a weekly radio program on CRN Digital Talk Radio. His later career included television appearances, radio work, and occasional acting projects before his death in 2020.
