Early Life & Education
Andrew Eppley Shue was born on February 20, 1967, in Wilmington, Delaware, United States, which makes his zodiac sign Pisces. He is an American of German and English descent, and his religion is Christianity.
His father, James Shue, was a lawyer and real estate developer who served as president of the International Food and Beverage Corporation and ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Congress in New Jersey as a Republican. James was of German ancestry from Pennsylvania and died in 2013.
His mother, Anne Brewster Wells (née Wells, later Palmer), is a bank executive who rose to vice president of the private division of Chemical Bank Corporation, and she traces her ancestry to the Pilgrim leader William Brewster.
Shue grew up alongside his siblings, the actress Elisabeth Shue, John Shue and Will Shue. His elder brother Will died in an accident in 1988.
He attended Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey, and was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 1994. He went on to Dartmouth College and graduated in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in history.
He played for the Dartmouth Big Green soccer team from 1985 to 1988, making 53 appearances and scoring 8 goals, and earned Regional All-America recognition. During college, he also spent a winter studying and playing for Queen’s Park FC in Glasgow, Scotland.
Career
Andrew Shue began on screen in small, mostly uncredited parts, appearing as Peter, a member of the Cobra Kai dojo, in The Karate Kid (1984) and later as background figures in Vision Quest (1985), Adventures in Babysitting (1987) and Cocktail (1988).
He played Brian Billings in the The Wonder Years episode “The Lost Weekend” and appeared in American Shaolin in 1992, the same year he joined the cast of Melrose Place.
The role of Billy Campbell, the idealistic apartment manager at the centre of the Fox soap, made him a television star. He stayed with the show as a series regular for 191 episodes, from 1992 to 1998, and the series remains his best-known credit.
His other screen work includes the television movie Gulf City (1993), where he played Jack Craig, and the legal thriller The Rainmaker (1997), where he played the abusive husband Cliff Riker. He later returned to soccer through film, co-writing and co-producing Gracie (2007), in which he played Coach Owen Clark, and he made an uncredited appearance in Goal! III (2009).
Soccer was a parallel career. After graduating from Dartmouth College in 1989, he taught high school math at Founders High School in Zimbabwe and played for Bulawayo Highlanders in 1990, when the club won the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League and the CBZ Cup.
Back in the United States, he played indoor soccer for Los Angeles United in the Continental Indoor Soccer League in 1993 and for Anaheim Splash in 1994. He joined LA Galaxy in Major League Soccer for its inaugural 1996 season, where he played midfielder and recorded one assist in five games, and he spent the entire 1997 season on injured reserve.
Alongside acting and sport, Shue built a career as a social entrepreneur. He co-founded the youth-focused non-profit Do Something in 1993 with his childhood best friend Michael Sanchez, a nationwide network that helps young people create solutions to challenges in their schools and communities, and he later served on its board of directors.
In 2006, the pair co-founded CafeMom, a social networking site for mothers backed by Highland Capital Partners and Draper Fisher Jurvetson.
The platform grew into a family of brands that includes The Stir, Baby Name Wizard and MamasLatinas, though its community forums were shut down in May 2018 because of high advertising costs. He has also co-hosted the podcast Mad Life with Joan Robach and Chuck Nice.
