His father, Laurence R. Richter, was a Russian language professor, while his mother, Glenda Palmer, worked as a kitchen cabinet designer. His parents divorced when he was young.
He attended Yorkville High School before enrolling at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Andy Richter began his career performing with Chicago improv groups, including the iO Theater and the Annoyance Theatre.
In 1993, he joined Late Night with Conan O’Brien as a writer before quickly becoming the show’s announcer and comedic sidekick, a role that launched him into national fame.
After leaving the programme to pursue acting, he starred in sitcoms including Andy Richter Controls the Universe and Quintuplets.
He later reunited with Conan O’Brien for The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien and the TBS series Conan, continuing one of television’s longest-running comedy partnerships.
