Christopher McDonald was born on 15 February 1955 in New York City, New York. He grew up in Romulus, New York, as one of seven children of nursing professor and real estate agent Patricia Ann Hadfield and educator and high school principal James Randall McDonald.
His younger brother Daniel McDonald became an actor and singer.
McDonald graduated from Romulus Central School in 1973 and attended Hobart College, where he initially studied pre-med and played football and soccer before pursuing acting.
He later trained with Stella Adler and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He is of Irish descent and practices Catholicism.

Christopher McDonald began his professional career in theatre and made his screen debut as a member of the T-Birds in Grease 2 (1982). He continued with roles in Where the Boys Are ’84, Breakin’, and other films before gaining wider attention in Thelma & Louise (1991). His performance as Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore (1996) became his signature role.
