His interest in martial arts began at age four, encouraged by his father, Benjamin, a pencak silat practitioner and trainer in the Cimande style.

Donny Alamsyah entered professional acting after accompanying a friend to a casting session for Gie.
Although he did not go to the audition intending to pursue a film role, he was eventually cast as Jaka. Gie became his first feature-film appearance and opened the door to further acting opportunities.
His profile grew considerably after he appeared in 9 Naga in 2006. He subsequently worked in films including Sang Dewi, Kala, Fiksi., Takut: Faces of Fear and Drupadi.
