Early Life and Education
Hanung Bramantyo was born on 1 October 1975 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, to Salim Purnomo and Mulyani.
He is the eldest of five children and developed an interest in theatre during childhood. While in high school, he performed Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot with his theatre group.
His first university study was economics at the Islamic University of Indonesia, but he did not complete the program.
He later studied film at the Jakarta Art Institute, where he developed his filmmaking skills before entering the industry. Hanung is Javanese and practices the Islamic faith.
Career
Hanung Bramantyo entered filmmaking through short films and made his directorial debut with Tlutur in 1998.
The film won first prize at the Jakarta Arts Council’s Alternative Film Festival. He moved into feature films with Brownies in 2004, which earned him his first Citra Award for Best Director.
His breakthrough became even greater with Ayat-Ayat Cinta (2008), a commercially successful religious drama that brought him wider national recognition.
He went on to direct Perempuan Berkalung Sorban, Tanda Tanya, Sang Pencerah, Perahu Kertas, Soekarno: Indonesia Merdeka, Rudy Habibie, Kartini, Bumi Manusia, Sultan Agung, Gundala, Ipar Adalah Maut, and Gowok: Kamasutra Jawa.
He won a second Citra Award for Best Director for Get Married in 2007 and has become one of Indonesia’s most prolific filmmakers.
