İzzet Altınmeşe was born on 26 October 1945 in Arpadere village, Çüngüş, Diyarbakır, to Bekir Altınmeşe and Fadime Altınmeşe.
He was the third of six children and moved with his family to Adana when he was about five months old because of economic hardship.
His father, who played the violin and sang regional folk songs, became his earliest musical influence.
Altınmeşe attended primary school in Adana and worked during his youth, first in tailoring and later as a barber, before abandoning the trade for music.
At about 18, Altınmeşe enrolled at the Adana Folk Education Centre in 1963, where he studied Turkish folk music, musical notation and singing while gaining his first stage experience.
He later moved to Ankara in 1970 and passed the Ankara Radio artist examination in 1976. Altınmeşe is of Kurdish ethnic heritage from the Diyarbakır region and was raised in a Muslim household.
Career
İzzet Altınmeşe took his first professional musical steps in Adana, where he performed folk songs after completing his training at the Folk Education Centre. His first record arrived in 1965, followed by numerous 45-rpm releases during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
After relocating to Ankara, he continued performing and studying with leading Turkish folk musicians. His 1972 composition “Biraz da Bana Gül Kader” brought him wider recognition, while his interpretation of “Maden Dağı” further established his reputation.
Building on that success, Altınmeşe became a prominent Ankara Radio performer after passing its artist examination in 1976.
“Esmerim” became one of the major songs associated with his career, while his repertoire expanded to include regional traditions from eastern and southeastern Anatolia as well as Kerkük and Azerbaijani musical forms.
He later moved to Istanbul, worked for the Ministry of Culture’s Turkish Folk Music ensemble and received the State Artist title in 1998. His career also includes seven film appearances and the television series Eşref Saati.
