Joel Smallbone was born on 5 June 1984 in Sydney, Australia, to David Smallbone, a music promoter, and Helen Smallbone.
He grew up as one of seven children alongside his older sister Rebecca St. James, sisters Libby Smallbone, and brothers Ben Smallbone, Daniel Smallbone, Joshua Smallbone and Luke Smallbone.
In 1991, the family relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, following his father’s career difficulties in Australia.
