Early Life and Education

Jason Winer was born on 7 December 1972 in Baltimore, Maryland, and raised in the Stevenson area. His father, Jay Winer, worked as a commercial real estate developer, and his mother is Sharyn Winer, while it is not publicly known if he has any siblings.

He attended the Friends School of Baltimore and showed an early interest in performing, appearing in local synagogue productions from the age of eight and later hosting a teen segment on local television.

He studied at Northwestern University, where he double-majored in performance studies and photography and participated in the Mee-Ow Show comedy troupe. He also trained at the Improv Olympic Theatre in Chicago under Del Close. He is of Jewish origin and his religion is Judaism.

Jason Winer began his professional career as an actor and comedian, appearing in commercials for brands such as Budweiser, Nike and Dr Pepper, performing stand-up, and starring on MTV’s The Blame Game. He transitioned to directing with the short film The Adventures of Big Handsome Guy and His Little Friend (2005).

His breakthrough came with the ABC sitcom Modern Family. He directed the pilot episode and served as producing director for the first season, helming 13 of its 24 episodes. Over the series’ run he directed more than 20 episodes in total. The show earned him a Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy Series and a Primetime Emmy Award as part of the producing team for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Winer made his feature film debut directing the 2011 remake of Arthur, starring Russell Brand and Helen Mirren. He later directed the independent romantic comedy Ode to Joy (2019). He has also directed and produced numerous television pilots and series, including Don’t Trust the B–– in Apartment 23, Life in Pieces, Single Parents, Perfect Harmony, The Big Leap and The Santa Clauses. He co-created the sitcom 1600 Penn.
